Chapter Sixteen

Sam reached the mansion with her stomach swimming and doubt attacking every choice. She touched her lips, remembering the kiss. She’d shared hundreds but couldn’t get the taste of him out of her mind. And now she had to tell him the truth, she had the ability to cure his daughter. If he hated her now, what was he going to do after he found out?

Sam walked out onto the patio of the house overlooking the grounds. Each blade of grass became part of an emerald expanse that could stretch on to infinity if winter didn’t force the grass to die and renew itself each spring. Could she really be responsible for each blade, even at the expense of her own wants and needs? Hadn’t the needs of the many always outweighed the needs of her one? When would her responsibilities end?

“You seem upset.”

Sam heard her strong heartbeat and recognized Tori approached. She also needed—a friend. “Kayla wasn’t at Sanctuary as I surmised.”

Tori opened her arms and hugged Sam. Multitudes of words could be found in one gesture. She squeezed hard and let go. “She isn’t at the estate in New York either. I don’t know where she is, and I put myself at great risk by drinking Bahir’s blood. Which revealed nothing as to her whereabouts.”

Tori rubbed Sam’s upper arm before stepping back. “You miss Lia, don’t you?”

Amazing. Simply amazing. How had Tori known her innermost anguish? “She always gave me the right words when I needed council. You share her intuition.”

Tori seemed taken aback. “I wouldn’t presume to step into her shoes. But you do have friends here.”

Sam walked around the outermost area of the patio before turning to smile at her friend. “I know.” She felt the sickness fill her gut again. “I was wrong to take the choice out of Cord’s hands. And now?”

“Yeah. We heard. The news about Miklos and his treachery reached us faster than you did.”

“Email.” Sam shook her head. She didn’t want to talk of war at the moment, so she changed the subject. “I’m sorry I haven’t had time to take you up on your offer for a girls’ night out.”

Tori snorted. “You’ve been a little busy.”

“Still, I would have liked to share some good with you and Stacy. You’ve both worked so hard.”

“Everyone has. We’re a family.” Tori reached out and squeezed Sam’s hand, once hard, before letting go. “What’s wrong, Sam?”

She didn’t know if she should confide in Tori and yet, wasn’t that why she stayed and allowed Tori to approach? “Cord is already angry with me for making him keep his promise to find the cure. I can’t imagine what he’ll do when he finds out about the cells and what they can do.”

Tori’s face fell. “Houston? We have a problem. He already knows, I’m afraid. Damn those little white lies, eh?”

So much made sense now. No wonder he’d gotten so angry at his home. Why hadn’t he said anything? Why had he decided to keep the truth from Sam? “Not so little anymore.
